SFA Board of Education Meeting Minutes April 10, 2008

Opening Prayer: Joe Happe
Meeting called to order at 7:05
Approval of Agenda: Agenda was accepted. Policy review tabled until May meeting
Approval of Minutes: A motion was made by Fran Otte to approve the March minutes, second by Lisa Davis-cook. March minutes were approved.
Guests: None.
Chair Report: Welcome to new members Greg Ehm, Mary Kassing and Michelle Vanlandschoot. Julie Ricke is attending the marketing meeting for the Diocesan Schools. Dr. Gubbles was sent an Email voicing the SFA BOE positive response to helping host the National Catholic Educational Association’s Department of Catholic Boards and Councils of Education meeting in the fall of 2009 in Des Moines
New Business
Education/Technology: John Pink and Diane Nitzel from the Education Technology committee held a presentation on the proposed 3 year plan for a technology update for the Day School.
Highlights included:
Year one 2008-09: Complete classrooms for all classes K-4th grade
One subject 5th-8th grade

Wireless Tablet
Ceiling mounted Speaker

Cost Classrooms- $4,100 per room

Infinite Campus presentation was also held. This is a complete education process management system. It is Web based and would allow management for Student info, Health records, Data warehousing, Integrated grade book, State reporting data management, Scheduling for school rooms, Food service including online payment system, email and voice messaging in addition to a student and parent portal to allow online access to grades and homework assignments.
Cost of Infinite Campus
Yearly management fee of $10 per student ($6,850 at SFA)
Yearly Fee of $2/student for Food Service Module ($1,644)
1st year set up cost $30,900. This includes Implementation, Data conversion, training, software, hardware and support.

School Admissions Criteria Policy - A subcommittee consisting of Tom Mallisee, Lisa Davis-Cook, Mary Kassing and Michelle Vanlandschoot will begin looking at the current policy and will report back to the Board any potential revisions.

RE- Suzee Stone is resigning.
Day School – Applications are coming in for the open 3rd and 4th grade teaching positions. Interviews will be held on May 1st. The new trophy case was installed over spring break
Preschool- Staffing needs if any should be known by the May meeting.
Youth Ministry- 8th grade students are now eligible to participate in Youth Ministry events.
Finance –Updated Budget distributed.
Home and School – None
Pastoral Council- The 5 year plan is undergoing its final review. PC officers for 08-09 are Kevin Crowley – vice chair and Dan Nielsen- secretary
Pastors Report- We have a new Bishop for the Des Moines Diocese – Bishop Richard Pates will be installed on May 29th.

Approval of Agenda: Agenda was accepted.
Approval of Minutes: A motion was made by Lisa Davis-Cook to approve the February minutes, second by Fran Otte. February minutes were approved.
Guests: None.
Chair Report: The new BOE members discerned for appointment for the 08-11 terms are Greg Ehm, Mary Cassing and Michelle Vanlandschoot.
Education/Technology: Mike Oliver and Diane Nitzel from the Education Technology committee held a presentation on the potential updates for the day school classrooms. This included a presentation on an interactive white board- one potential upgrade. The technology committee will be finalizing the recommendations for the school upgrade. The emphasis of the recommendations will be to provide equipment that will promote effective learning, keep students engaged, motivated and enthusiastic about learning and will prepare students for the future. Final costs have not been calculated and will depend upon the upgrades that are recommended.
New Business:
Discernment for the 2008-09 BOE officers will be held during the April meeting
The following Fees were proposed for the 08-09 school year
Band $60/mo this is a $5 per month increase. Motion by Tom Mallisee 2nd Mike Wunn – Motion passed
School Lunch Fees
Student $2.50 (.30 increase)
Staff $2.50 (.20 increase)
Adult Guest $3.50 (.50 increase)

Policy Review
The 530 series of policies regarding Student responsibility and discipline were reviewed and a first reading held. Final reading will be during the April meeting.
The discussion regarding the potential preparation of a strategic 5 year plan was tabled until April
Joe presented an email from Superintendent Luvern Gubbles regarding a survey that was held by the diocese regarding what is and is not important to parents when considering sending their children to Parochial Schools. The results will be presented on Thursday April 10th at the Diocesan Pastoral Center.
Superintendent Gubbles also inquired to the interest of the board members in helping host a meeting of the National Catholic Educational Association’s Department of Catholic Boards and Councils of Education. The planned date is in October of 2009. The board is supportive of helping host this meeting.
Misty Hade submitted a letter of resignation from Angie Dante for the 08-09 year. The letter was accepted with regret. Motion by Lisa Davis-Cook 2nd Tom Leon.

Discussion for possible revision of criteria for ranking prospective students will be tabled until April.

Day School – Administration approved moving to a trimester calendar for the 2008-09 School Year.
Guidance will not be reported on Progress reports.
A new trophy case will be installed over Spring Break.
The extra snow day that was taken will be made up during a Professional Development Day this spring.
Finance –Updated Budget distributed.
Home and School – SFA parental involvement in Pickup/Drop off of students will be discussed.
Pastoral Council – Priorities are being established for the Finance Council.
